The Energia was not a booster, it is a rocket that carried its payload on it's side.
I think it really just depends on the configuration. One could make an argument that it is still a booster when it is lifting Energia, but when it is just a standalone system then it could be considered its own rocket.

Since Buran had no main engines like the STS orbiter had, I'm more inclined to agree with Anikta . [TEA]
What's the difference between Buran and a satellite payload?

On a different note, Energia embodies the Star wars/Millennial Falcon aesthetic very strongly.

Good point. For some reason I had always just assumed that Buran has its own engines.
