This is an excerpt of a blog post I made on the SFS wiki.

Today I was messing around with zero gravity (cheat) and a few hundred docking ports.
I watched as most of the docking ports were ejected, but a few managed to accrete into large fast-rotating clumps of 5-10.
As I watched these groups, I saw that the docking ports on the edges of said clumps, started to pull away from the main clump, and start to "orbit" the clump, within each docking ports' "magnetic field area".
The docking port then kept migrating away from the clump, until it was ejected, then the cycle would repeat. The longest a docking port moon system has lasted is ~15 minutes.
The "docking port moon" would eventually be ejected entirely.
Multiple Systems
I have only seen very few docking port multiple systems, consisting of two or three docking ports.
These systems are incredibly unstable, and usually only last a few minutes at most.
Clump Interactions
Because the "no aerodynamic drag" cheat as well as the "no gravity" cheat were both on, the magnetic forces of each clump, attract them. These clumps then, slow down the rotation of one clump (and cause it to break apart), while the other one is sped up (by about one tenth of a m/s) or, the clumps collide and form a larger clump.
