Unless this is on hard/realistic, you should do it in one launch :)

I don’t think that this would have been possible, as the shuttle alone barely came back with any fuel, and it’s only job was to orbit mars and then return to earth. however, if you have a solution I would like to see it

Oh, sorry I didn't notice your message Orion. Indeed you're right, it has to be done in a single launch.
Sorry NOG Aerospace, I have to remove the badge for now.

I may suggest looking at mine as I done two launches before I did the one launch: Team Frontier: The Quest for Mars

After some tweaked and O P T O M I Z I N G I’ve returned with a single launch that gets me to mars and back.

Oops, when I read your first reply I though that it was a suggestion and not actually part of the rules.

anyways, heres the full mission:

How did you get the spacecraft down to the Martian surface without a heat shield?

By burning full retrograde once the temp reaches 100C and continuing till the temperature starts falling again, then a slower burn + 4 parachutes to land down safely

I can record the process if you’d like, I already have a quick save at low mars orbit

That would be helpful, thank you.

What do you use this stage for?

I believe that that stage is for getting the transfer speed just right.

Here is a demonstration of the maneuver that I used to land on mars. Here, I started the burn before entering the atmosphere, which led to a much lower velocity upon entry and as a result I did not heat up atall. here is the video link. It expires in two days, so I’ll be making a YouTube channel and uploading it there later.
