Heat shields break over 6000°C or so, it's the only way to reach or beat his number.
Not necessarily. I could get a value above 10k myself in the "Air is lava"challenge:

I didn't use cheats, but I don't know how I reached this value, the heat peak approximately corresponds to the first screenshot.

I've noticed that heat shields, once you enter then flew off then goes back, the total heat will register.

i got just about the same numbers and didn't boom my ship, no screenshots of that one though. i did catch some screen shots of numbers that should have boomed my capsule here.

now, that right there is just impressive. also, i'd hardly call that "safely."

The heat counter is a total of heat of your entire uhh """"ship""""
I thought about something like that, but that doesn't look right. My uhh """"ship"""" (what's wrong with it? :p) had 3 shields which temperature was above 5800°C, so the total heat is way above 10500°C.

I thought it could be the total heat generated during reentry, which would be the temperature a fully exposed part would have reached if there was no cooling process. But that will be hard to prove.

Thanks! Yeah, landing this thing implied a lot of sweating. :p

You can get the number without no cheats, so use no cheats I assume.

Is it okay if part of your rocket explodes? 17720°
Flew straight up to 100,000km, then powered descent, when 3rd stage out of fuel, aimed heat shield at ground.

I thought that the temperature displayed in the end was the total heat generated during reentry, so I had the idea to let a ship fly during as long as possible in the high atmosphere and accumulate heat:

And the result is...

5929°C!!! Epic fail :D

At least I tried.
