Hey guys, since i heard that 1.5.9 will add new smooth nose cones, first thing i wanted to do was to build a shuttle... And so i did!

I present to you... Hussar

Screenshot_2022-11-25-20-24-39-85.png

I didnt test it's max payload capacity, but it seems to be a pretty capable shuttle (for my needs that is).

Hussar consists of an expendable booster powered by 4 titan and 1 hawk engine, the shuttle itself has two frontiers and one valiant.

Orbiter lands by parachutes and deploys "landing gear" from the bottom, it has a basic payload bay design with a docking port for the bay to dock to when opened, and a separate docking port to dock to stations outside of the bay.

Thats pretty much all about it, its a simple but effective shittle, i quickly finished describing it cause i already decided to go big and... do a Mars landing with it, even before lunar landing! More on that below.

For now i wont post a sharing link to it, as i might improve it later.

To start, we first need to learn the plan for the mission:

The mission starts with these two Hussar shuttles:

Screenshot_2022-11-25-20-32-11-17_cba7b177b2edecae2cc69ac3f7d2b91d.png

Left one first.

This Hussar has been modified, with an additional docking port on the nose. The plan for it is to do most of the transfer to Mars (after being refueled in orbit), release the red Hussar and then burn back towards Earth, slow down and land.

Right one now.

The red Hussar will obviously head to mars, it will launch after the right one and dock to it using a docking port located near the engines. It will be refueled in orbit, sent into a transfer trajectory by the right shuttle and save alot of fuel that way. Then finish the transfer, land on Mars and come back.

Lets see the first launch!

I forgot to mention that this shuttle has special adapters inside it's payload bay, one to connect it to the Mars Hussar and the other for docking of refuel Hussars. You'll see them in the next post when the Mars-headed Hussar launches.

Time for the second launch! Lets just go straight to it...

Now that we're in orbit, we transfer to the other shuttle and randezvous... Which is what i did
Screenshot_2022-11-25-21-06-54-24_cba7b177b2edecae2cc69ac3f7d2b91d.png

Now lets take out the adapters and attach the shuttles together...

Great! The shuttles are docked, next flights will refuel them. I'll post them in the next message :)

Refuel launches have concluded, i decided to put most of the events in this one image, so its easier to post

While the landing for the first mission was perfect
Screenshot_2022-11-25-21-36-45-99_cba7b177b2edecae2cc69ac3f7d2b91d.png

On the second mission, the landing gear was damaged, most likely because the shuttle was too heavy, with excess fuel on board. I would still call that a successful landing though :p
Screenshot_2022-11-25-21-49-35-01_cba7b177b2edecae2cc69ac3f7d2b91d.png

Both shuttles in orbit are fully fueled, this means that the Mars mission will start soon! See you in another post!

I havent actually mentioned this, but inside the payload bay of the Martian Hussar are additional habitats, they will be separated in Martian orbit.

Going back to the topic of this thread...

Our stay on Mars is complete, payload bay is closed, all systems confirmed to be working.
Screenshot_2022-11-25-23-07-15-88_cba7b177b2edecae2cc69ac3f7d2b91d.png

That means that we can...

Liftoff!

And we're in orbit!

Time to ditch some weight
Screenshot_2022-11-25-23-09-06-83_cba7b177b2edecae2cc69ac3f7d2b91d.png

And transfer home

Screenshot_2022-11-25-23-11-07-63_cba7b177b2edecae2cc69ac3f7d2b91d.png

And we're captured!
Screenshot_2022-11-25-23-12-07-38_cba7b177b2edecae2cc69ac3f7d2b91d.png

You'd think that everything is fine, we just deorbit ourselves and end the journey... However, it seems that i forgot to stage landing gear to deploy! We are also orbiting backwards, which means our orientation would be wrong.

Hussar boosting configuration

The shuttle covered in burn marks has been reused from an earlier mission, it returned to low orbit and will be refueled, and boosted to an interplanetary mission once it's boosting shuttle gets refueled too
