You wanna know what was an optimistic and popular idea during the 1930s? Fascism.
You wanna who was a pessimist? Winston Churchill.
Sir Winston was pessimistic and against the fascist idea, but Stalin was stupidly optimistic about it, and it was that optimism that almost got his ass kicked eastwards during Operation Barbarossa.
Pessimism saved Stalin in the same scenario, his policy of the rapid industrialization of the Soviet Union, which allowed the reds to out-produce the Jerries during the great patriotic war.
