First up is the shuttle.
I took this to heart.

Lol. No a shuttle by definition has a booster to reduce the workload of the shuttle to near nothing on the way up and leaves it free to spend its remaining resources in space or on the way down. In short, it needs a booster.

And I looked at some pics of Buran... and one thing led to another...



But wait! The badge says "Fly me to the moon". Sooooo, pack a lunch Dmitri, we're going for a ride.


Ohmigod Vasily, why are we on the moon?!?!


Finally going home, only stopping for a pee and to drop off the lunar sats and the droptank that contained the fuel for TMI.


Vasily? Doesn't that angle look a little steep?
It will be fine Dimitri.

Definitely. And I did see this once. Yeah 1.4 really aged quickly since 1.5 came out.

Yeah, part clipping might've been the biggest thing about 1.5 that wasn't about internal code improvements.

Glitch in the matrix:

I opted for a Rube Goldberg reuse machine.


Step one, safely eject the unneeded fairing half. The kolibri will ensure it gets destroyed far away.

Launch. And then stabilise the platform so it doesn't disappear.

Lofted trajectory as is normal for these sorts of rockets....

Quickly deploy drag generators, landing legs and RCS, and do the boostback burn while the second stage continues burning for orbit within the 5km SFS physics limit.

So that's the second stage sorted, it'll keep for a while. Lets switch back to the first stage.


Easy enough compared to what's to come.


Payload deployment and deorbit.


This took me so many tries.

Scoot up with the tower and use the solar elevatortm to load the payload and refuel.


Wait, this is familiar.

May as well secure the tower again, though this is our last flight.


Similar trajectory and MECO.


Sweet!

Deorbit and landing still took a few tries, yeah.
Anyway, that's flight number 2 complete.

As you can see, it weighs just under 2400t all up. This might be a challenge for my skills...
Unless I overlooked something, there's no part clipping there.


This rocket is a bad design for MECO and separation.., if you don't do things juuuuust right the second stage is destroyed.


Fairing sep looks cool.

Yes, very much so starts and finishes. It never breaks a positiveTWR.
You'd need maybe twice as much thrust there. Maybe swap that centre hawk for a Titan. Or go frontier, titan, frontier, titan, frontier. You'll get less overall ΔV, but you'll lose a lot less from gravity losses on the way up

I definitely tend to underengine. Just swapped the second stage hawk for a titan. MUCH easier to fly now.
