Yep,
Here as you can see all the Ares I prototypes are having the same basic structure, thin 1st stage and bigger wider second one.

It will probably make it too heavy in SFS yes.
In real life, the second stage is propelled by liquid hydrogen and oxygen, but liquid hydrogen is so little dense that even a large quantity of it is not that heavy. On the contrary, the booster that runs on solid fuel is way much heavier despite his size.

If you want to make it both realistic and able to fly, a solution is to partially empty the fuel of the second stage to alleviate it.

Top heavy rockets are more stable, actually.
Ares 1 had many problems like being bendy and the fact that an abort would have the astronauts floating their capsule parachutes through the engine fire, but being top heavy isn't a problem.

It has a docking port at the top.
The Launch escape system is connected to the fairing so release it only after orbiting.
