I thought it said 300 t for 1.4 players in the instructions page?

No.

For pre-1.4 players half of these values, since everything was half massed back then.

"For PRE-1.4 players". Which means for people on the versions before 1.4 was first released, does not apply to 1.4 players. 1.4 players stick with 600 tons.

One thing to notice here is that because of the broken 1.4 drag, you don't have to exit and resume the game in this challenge, you can play with the no drag glitch, not with the cheat, but you don't have to exit and resume the game.
