I think in order to successfully dock first the orbit difference between the target ship and your ship should be a higher number, if not it took you ages to dock

You'll have to explain us more specifically what's your problem. We gave you the link to the USFS, a link to a thread in which you have 3 docking tutorials, we can't help much more if you don't give us any detail.

Then cancel out your velocity when your close to it

You have to select your target and click "navigate to", the game will show you a transfer trajectory that leads to an encounter.

If you perform the transfer as explained, you should get a close enough encounter to be able to spot the target ship from the world view.

But seriously, explain us clearly how you proceed. With screenshots, by explaining what you attempt to do. We posted tutorials and everything we could, but you never answered with more than a short sentence. Please, also make an effort on your side dude, we can't read in your mind, help us understanding what's the problem.
