Because that is how they felt like doing the mission. Direct ascent missions are as honorable as any.
Besides the fact that this is from a super old version in the game, when that method was quite intuitive because you had to teach the game to yourself.

I didn't do orbits back then, because it was hard to do with that version of the game and I didn't really understand the physics behind it. Today I would use orbits.
