So, now I've done frontier, time to think about hawk!
So , the shuttle.
Is 500t enough for approval?
I think one day I'll make a more efficient, perhaps reusable Korbli 2. Or I'll call it something different.

Okay, now I'll try the mercury landing. I downloaded the quicksave, looked at the craft and thought "No way that thing's gonna land on mercury wth a direct transfer". So... What would Altair do? That is the question.
Well, probably a gravity assist. So, apart from the fact that I never used gravity assists in a controlled way and intentionally, I've got phase 1 figured out. Then I remembered him saying something about the escape direction being like a prograde/retrograde indicator. Well, I saw where venus is, and burned until the escape direction would be kinda retrograde to venus's orbit direction. And... I actually didn't mess up!

Dunno if this is good or bad. I think I still need to get a mercury encounter. Probably again a classic burn won't be enough, so I think I'll set it as target and burn at peri to maximize the oberth effect.
And honestly, If not for this challenge, idk if I would have motivation to learn grav assists.

Hell. Yeah. It has happened! Trial and error, this is the key. Oh, and quicksaves.

Venus assist

Yess, encunter with 51%! (Honestly though I was stressed I needed way more)

Some flyby

Capture burn(Extended the solars for fun)

And after a few crashes, I found a height to start my engines (could've been lower, I lost a lot of fuel hovering)...

Soft touchdown! No solars broken.

Wait, as I didn't break the panels... Does this mean I'm team hawk now?

Great thanks to Altair, if not for his gravity assist explanations on the forum I wouldn't have made it.
And thanks to you, who invented these challenges, because they made me learn a lot of things, and also practice some.

Well, that's precisely why I put them in spoilers. Maybe should've put the landing image outside of them.
Here:

Lol, I just noticed I have 1% fuel. Could've been 2.5, if I did a proper hoverslam, not a "Bouncy landing"-ended hoverslam.
I fear this isn't enough to get back to earth :p
Thanks! I hope you succeed soon!

Lol. Marmilo is that accurate?
Definitely. I was shaking a bit after this one.
PS. I might've been a bit too specific about the way I did it, maybe some admin could... cut down the details a bit, cause this might spoil the challenge for others.

Lol, I'm getting better at this.

Ngl though, this was like attempt #30 or something.
I'm still gonna beat this. I'll have at least 6.7%. And I know it's possible, I won't be stopped.

Marmilo that's really good practice. You just bought the entire galaxy (depending which planet pack you run) for the price of Venus  Venus, as you can probably tell, is the gateway to anywhere. Though you still need to master VEEGA.

Is there a VEEGA tutorial for 1.5 btw?

I'm doing you one better. I'm making a video.
Cool! I can't wait! Actually the video for 1.4 VEEGA was what actually pushed me to do it. Did It once, but then 1.5 kicked in and it became irrelevant. Oh, and during the mercury mission I finally notice how much the lack of closest approach indicator sucks.

I’m sorry, what’s the weight of the largest fuel tank in 1.5, the 12 wide? Was it 120 tons, right? I can’t remember...
