On the question of heightmaps

Does anyone know how to make custom height maps? Is there like a software someone is using?

I think there's two ways (take this with a pinch of salt as this is the person who broke their world with heightmaps approximately 5 hours ago):

1. You can have a text file with all the points
2. You can have a drawing with the shape of the heightmap. mariohobbs explains in this thread: Guide: Custom Height maps
