ok so uhh. i had some amount of fuel remaining in the stage

No good. If those are the fuel tanks I think they are, 11% is not nearly enough to refill the probe.

It's not just a point. You pretty much did a voyager challenge with a 18.6t probe instead of a 25t probe. When the mass limit is 250t, that missing fuel from the probe counts for a lot and makes the challenge way easier.
