why does steam sfs crash with modloader on startup? I'm on Mac and there's no new mods/etc and I verified and reset my files FOUR TIMES

The fact that it's on Mac is probably what causes the problem: the mod loader is untested on Mac, and the result not guaranteed. We already had some complaints in that sense, you're not the only one. Sadly, there's not much that can be done.

if its an Intel mac, you could try installing Windows and using modloader
