Solved How to Design

This is in response to a question by @matt_548. How does one design such nice planes, rockets, rovers, etc.? It starts with an idea. I will design a... helicopter. First thing that came to mind. Ok, so build space wise, how big do I want it? Small, so I don't have to flip it over or anything. Right. This means it is gonna be small. The thing that takes the most width alone is the propeller. So let's see...

Ok that leaves a bit of width for the tail to stick out. Let's do that next:
Screenshot_2018-10-02-12-18-04.png

Not a totally unsightly affair... Ok for now. Starting the transition to the body:
Screenshot_2018-10-02-12-18-52.png

And the nose bit. Ok I don't actually know how I'll get this done... Let's try a few things.
Screenshot_2018-10-02-12-19-30.png

Doesn't fit...
Screenshot_2018-10-02-12-20-27.png

Noooo... I can already see it not working out. Oh, well, let's just make it with structural parts, we'll find a solution later.
Screenshot_2018-10-02-12-23-08.png

Ah... Much better. Now let's close it up at the bottom. An 8x1 will fit perfectly.
Screenshot_2018-10-02-12-23-21.png

The foot should go...
Screenshot_2018-10-02-12-24-59.png

... about there. Launch. But wait, it doesn't even have an engine? So what, I just want to see if it will fall over or not...
Screenshot_2018-10-02-12-25-09.png

... Launch Anyway.
Screenshot_2018-10-02-12-27-00.png
And it stands! Well. Not bad, now we have something to work with.
I will continue posting until I have a usable, decent looking helicopter in my saves.

Nice, it looks pretty good. I’ll try making a heli later

Ok I feel like we can do that tail transition better. So out with those two angles, and shift the tail up a bit for the new part:
Screenshot_2018-10-02-13-34-11.png
Screenshot_2018-10-02-13-35-31.png

Well, the top fits nicely, but the bottom... No. But I like the angle. And I see a good and natural space for the forward engine.
Screenshot_2018-10-02-13-35-52.png

Ah, now that's a lot easier on the eye. Only a Grasshopper will fit, but we'll see if it is sufficient or not at another time. The front section is a bit long for the short grasshopper to look right when connected to a fuel tank. So I take a smaller tank for the tail to fit the engine's tank farther back.
Screenshot_2018-10-02-13-36-40.png
Screenshot_2018-10-02-13-37-36.png

Now just to fill that unsightly gap on top temporarily.
Screenshot_2018-10-02-13-37-55.png

The foot is weird now though. Fix that and...
Screenshot_2018-10-02-13-38-31.png

... Done!
Launch just for show and smile
Screenshot_2018-10-02-13-39-52.png

:) All-in-all a good improvement.

Lol I don’t want to be annoying but.....don’t you need a capsule?

Ah, but where will it fit... I'll find an appropriate place later because I don't need to control it yet.

I want a nice nose. We tried a bit in the first post, but I have another idea. Fairings! But the problem here is, fairings don't shape that way. But then again, half fairings do... Let's see what we can make of it.
Screenshot_2018-10-02-15-10-27.png
Screenshot_2018-10-02-15-11-38.png

Looks like we have something happening here... Right, add a probe so we can pop those fairings, and a fairing piece to stretch back to the leg, so as to stick, or else the whole thing just falls apart when I split the fairings.
Screenshot_2018-10-02-15-14-14.png

Launch, split and...
Screenshot_2018-10-02-15-16-16.png

... Nothing.
Scrap...
Ok maybe work with it as is. Try a window-ish something above it. Will it work?
Screenshot_2018-10-02-15-24-09.png

Well obviously not. But I tried anyway.
... Right, that fairing was connected to that big centre tank. Better get rid of it then.
Screenshot_2018-10-02-15-20-52.png
Screenshot_2018-10-02-15-25-40.png

Ok the flatter tank breaks the connection that trashed our plan earlier. Shifted the probe back so it stays connected. Launch, split, and...
Screenshot_2018-10-02-15-26-56.png
Screenshot_2018-10-02-15-27-23.png

YES! That makes me happy! That is the shape I wanted, in fact it is better than I hoped for :D. We're getting somewhere...

A fully functional Apache helicopter.

It can hover with a secret engine inside. Then if you use both engines it can easily fly off in to the distance

Danny, you want to do the next instalment on my helicopter? (Only one part of the helicopter)
