Just a guess, thats what I did in bp edit. Phantom-ing a part will allow you to build mechanisms within solid parts.

My reason for thinking this is the case is because they may have originally connected the SRB to the fuel tank and then were BP edited elsewhere, but are still technically connected the same way.

Well what makes a shuttle a shuttle? There's the plane shape, the cargo area, and the ability to land, as well as needing boosters to reach orbit. Now you take those and start designing, refining, testing, improving until it works reliably with a reasonable payload.
