It was made in real life, a space station made from a Saturn V fuel tank.
The 'space station in a fuel tank' part of SFS is 100% real and even has a name: Wet Workshop

Exactly that. If they couldn't get a space Saturn V to lift Skylab 'dry', then they were going to use a IB and lift it 'wet', as in, the lab would be full of fuel to be drained during the insertion burn ready for occupation.
